Why run for Congress when I’ve never run for or held a political office of any kind in my life?

America was “of all the nations in the world . . . most justly called a Christian nation” because Christianity “has so largely shaped and molded it”.—Supreme Court Justice David Brewer (1837-1910). Christianity is the religion that has most shaped America throughout the majority of American history. The Founding Fathers repeatedly and consistently cited scripture and the teachings of the Bible when speaking of how this Nation was created. However, on June 25, l962, 39 million students were forbidden to do what they and their predecessors had been doing since the founding of our nation, publicly calling upon the name of the Lord at the beginning of each school day.

Since that time, God has been systematically removed from society. Christians and Religious Liberty are under constant attack. Families are being destroyed by the absence of family values, and morals once provided openly and supported by educational institutions, the workplace, and all levels of government. Subsequently, the value of God’s gifts, women and children, the very essence of our continued existence, are abused, devalued, abandoned, shattered, and destroyed. As families crumble, so does the economy and society as a whole.

As part of his Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln described the government as a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” A phrase he borrowed from John Wycliffe who wrote in the prologue to his translation of the Bible in 1384, “The Bible is for the Government of the People, by the People, and for the People.” It is no coincidence that the prevalence of career/professional politicians began to most rapidly emerge and grow at about the same time as prayer was banned in schools and God was being removed from society and families. That government no longer bears any resemblance to that description. We have a government full of professional and career politicians more interested in retaining and/or increasing their own power than they are in serving the people who put them in office. Too many politicians spend their entire adult lives in politics, never truly knowing what it’s like to live the life of 99.9% of the American population. Very adept at self-aggrandizement, posturing, disagreeing, and raising money to perpetuate their power, incumbent politicians are rarely challenged and even more rarely defeated.

I have been a servant of the people for all of my adult life, in the military and as a criminal prosecutor. Protecting and defending the inalienable rights endowed in every human by his or her Creator. As we have seen our Creator, God, removed, this Nation has seen the loss of family values and morals these attacks on God and Christianity have caused. We cannot keep saying “someone needs to do something,” IT IS TIME for action.  For several years I felt myself dying inside, I felt a lack of meaning and purpose in my life. I needed to be doing more. I initially thought I should wait until 2022 and give myself time to “prepare” for an endeavor such as this. I believe now that was evil speaking to delay any action. As the Founders would have said, “But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” – James 1:22. I decided to step out of the boat, and have faith that I was going to be guided and protected. I am qualified, and I am ready.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”  And I said, “Here I am, Send me!” – Isaiah 6:8

God, Family, Church, Country, Job…These are our Priorities. Restore Family Values and Morals.

A Date With Destiny

And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.”  Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. –Luke 10:2

Why Now? IT IS TIME!

Nick and Carrie met in February 2019, two Service Members nearing retirement, Nick in the Army Reserve in Austin, and Carrie on Active Duty at Fort Sam Houston. Both parents who know the difficulties associated with being single parents and Soldiers on Active Duty. To most, they would appear to be successful professionals, Nick an attorney and Carrie a Family Nurse Practitioner.  Both facing life’s challenges and struggling to find their true purpose. The inability to do more than they were doing was slowly but consistently draining them of their passion-PEOPLE.  Both believing there was more to do and much more THEY could do.

With their military backgrounds and experience, they were both also very frustrated with the broken military medical and legal systems as well as the political system. They were both looking for someone to serve the community with. What they didn’t know when they met is this would not be just an ordinary date between, professionals with similar backgrounds, experiences, concerns, frustrations, and needs to serve in a more significant way. This would be a date with destiny.

God was calling them to join forces. Carrie, learning in providing patient care how many people were dealing with the same issues, but not talking about it. Seeing and hearing firsthand how broken military families were fueling depression, anxiety, and suicide. It would be Carrie’s personal experience, fleeing a near decade long marriage filled with unthinkable domestic violence from her military spouse that would teach her the most.

She tried tirelessly and desperately to get help from the military, medical colleagues, CPS, Domestic Violence Action Centers, local churches, chaplains, counselors, and even lawyers in Virginia, California, and Texas. Her family desperately flying in repeatedly over the years as they watched, but not knowing how to help her. She was shocked to learn the system is completely dysfunctional and there was no help for her on the military or civilian side. Remarks from military police such as, “I don’t know why she’s even reporting, he didn’t even hit her”, said without the military police officer even knowing her history of domestic violence at their previous duty station and that this same spouse and soldier had threatened to kill her multiple times and already had more than 20 guns confiscated by the military after discharging his weapon in their home with their son sleeping upstairs. Finally, after repeated requests for more help and in fear for her life as she finally got the courage to leave, she and her son were moved on a “THREAT TO LIFE” order by the Army who admitted in writing they could not keep her safe, and they transferred her back to her home state of Texas.

She thought back in Texas she would finally be safe, but this too was short lived as she was then told by the Bexar County Family Justice Center they couldn’t help her either. At the same time, the Army was sending her abuser to training in San Antonio at his request after they believed him to be the very threat to her life. Terrified but emboldened, she was determined to have her voice heard even when lawyers and judges would threaten she could lose custody of her only son if she spoke the truth. Meanwhile, taking care of patients she saw first-hand how PTSD, domestic violence, and sexual assault, were literally killing patients and breaking down service members as the broken military medical system didn’t know how to help them. She wasn’t getting help, so how could she possibly recommend help for them. What Nick and Carrie learned in sharing their stories is that they are not alone. Nick and Carrie believed these experiences were not in vain and they had a DUTY to use what they learned for good. Not a duty to the Army, or to their respective professions, but a duty to God and all of His children, the PEOPLE!  A common saying among soldiers who are used to being failed by the system is, “it is what it is” and throwing their hands up in disgust and disbelief. Nick and Carrie could no longer accept that as an answer. If they didn’t speak, then who would? Carrie wrote in a text to Nick on 3/6/2019:

As leaders, we are here to be agents of change. That is never done without opposition, but with perseverance it paves the way for others. I can at least do that with what I’ve been given. I have nothing to lose. If they don’t hear me on this, who will they hear?

They believe IT IS TIME!
